quick word on the diaper thing ...

It seems that the presence of a pack of cloth diapers on our registry list has been confusing people -- several of our friends have taken it to mean that we're either doing cloth diapers instead of disposable, or that we've come up with some magical combo of cloth + disposable that keeps us on the right side of our environmental consciences, or something.

Well, no ... long story short, we're doing disposable.

All it is, is: We've been told by several new parents that it's right handy to have a stack o' cloth diapers around to use as towels, burp cloths, changing table pads (so you don't have to change and launder the cover every frickin time), etc. Like shop rags, but for babies, right? So we put a 12-pack on the list.

Spread the word! All the kool kids are doin it! ;-)

The Great Re-Org of 2007

No big news lately -- 30 weeks and change, baby several times a day having a regular Dance Party USA with its bad self, another routine prenatal appointment scheduled for this Friday -- so I'll just take a second to update y'all on the preparations we've made in the house for Kid A's arrival.

A couple of weeks ago, pretty much from sunup to sundown, we spend the entire weekend on moving-level activity in every room of the house but the kitchen, and here's the highlights, in R.'s words [with my additions in brackets]:

----------

Unloaded all of the books and moved the two seven-foot bookcases from the guest room to our bedroom and reloaded them with books. Earthquake-strapped the bookshelves to the wall. Moved our clothes dresser from one corner to the other and completely de-molded the thing from inside and out. Moved the old blue loveseat from the computer room out to the trash on the street. Unloaded the desk of all the computers, books, and crap. Threw out old 1997 bank statements and trash from the desk [this took me most of Saturday]. Dismantled the entire desk to get it out of the middle room [which will now be Kid A's room]. Moved it to the guest room. Reassembled the desk and loaded the computers and monitors and wiring and books and crap back into the desk. Moved the futon to the other side of the room [against the bathroom-side wall]. Boxed up two boxes of Videotapes we never play and put them out in the garage. Moved all of the amps and guitars to the guest room [R. will be putting up wall mounts for the guitars]. Took down all of the photos in the guest room. Tore down the broken blinds in the computer room and installed new ones that are actually flush inside the window frame [AND R. actually made and installed a screen to fit that previously-screenless window]. Vacuumed everything [including the cobwebs on the baseboards]. Made two trips to Home Depot. Wrapped things up enough to grill up a piece of Halibut on Sunday night. So we basically moved out and back into our house in a weekend.

----------

The computer room, which was completely empty after all of that activity, now holds the beautiful crib Aunt A. & Uncle P. handed down to us -- we spent a morning the next weekend cleaning and re-assembling it -- so we're getting ever closer to a state of household readiness. Now, to go buy a second car so I won't be stranded at home with a baby and no transpo ...

Awright, fine ...

Y'all want pictures? Here ya go ... I love how R. took them from a spectacular height, too -- it's like a funhouse mirror. These were taken on Sunday, July 7, while I was on the phone with Mom, who insisted that "pregnant women are CUTE!" Heh. Well, at least my hair looks shiny.

Stuff, gear, paraphernalia and what have you

Hey, everybody! We’ve done the major work of getting registered — and believe me, if you were to patronize Target on a Saturday afternoon, you’d understand why we call it “work.” What a nightmare.

Aaaanyway ...

At right, you’ll see links to the registry pages of Target and Babies R Us; I can’t link directly to our registry, but if you click those links, then search on either of our names, you’ll see the goods. Feel free to share with anyone who wants to know!

Couple of notes:

—R. still has to research a couple of the big items before we make our final choice (car seat, stroller, baby monitor), so those will be listed soon but aren’t in there yet.

—We still need Aunt A. to tell us exactly what she’s got to hand down from Sonic and Babygirl; we didn’t know whether to put, like, bassinet sheets and whatnot on the list.

—The specifics do matter on some things (diaper bag, breast pump, babyBjorn, etc.), but certain items are merely representatives of their type — we don’t care about the specific brand of onesies, for example; the color and pattern of the Boppy is completely unimportant; we do need a couple of hooded baby bath towels, but as long as it’s not Winnie the Pooh (haaaate) or some Licensed Latter-Day Disney Character, it doesn’t matter what they look like (frogs, ducks, stripes, the Van Halen logo printed over and over ... whatever!).

Twenty-eight weeks yesterday ... it ain’t the home stretch yet, but you can see it from here!
